5 Injured in Explosion at a Bronx Residence Firefighter Killed in Explosion After Reports of Gas Leak in the Bronx
(35 minutes later)
Five people were injured, one seriously, when an explosion destroyed a residential building and damaged several others in the Kingsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx early on Tuesday, city officials said. One firefighter was killed and at least six other people were injured in an explosion that destroyed a residential building and damaged others in the Bronx early on Tuesday, city officials said.
A New York Fire Department spokesman said that a call came in at 7:34 a.m. reporting a gas leak. Firefighters arrived four minutes later, with 25 units and 106 firefighters eventually arriving to battle the blaze, the spokesman said. The firefighter was one of several emergency workers responding to a report of a gas leak at the building in the Kingsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx.
The Fire Department said on Twitter that the explosion occurred at 304 West 234th Street, which it said was a private residence. The initial call came in around 6:20 a.m.; the explosion happened just after 7:30 a.m., a spokesman from the New York City Fire Department said.
By that time, about 20 members of the department were on the scene, the spokesman said.
David Khabinsky, 25, a photographer who lives nearby, said he was getting ready for work when he heard a loud boom around 7:30 a.m.
“I thought it was very loud,” he said. “Then five minutes later you hear police sirens, and then helicopter after helicopter after helicopter.”
