Zookeepers in eastern Germany say the situation is under control after two lions escaped from their enclosure overnight.

Leipzig zoo officials said one lion was successfully corralled back into its cage and the second was shot with a tranquiliser and would shortly be returned too.

Earlier, officials told the DPA news agency that the lions had somehow escaped and were somewhere on the zoo grounds. The zoo was closed to the public on Thursday morning and an emergency plan put in place. Nobody was injured in the incident.

The two male lions, Majo and Motshegetsi, were born about a year ago at Basel zoo and have been in Leipzig since August.
