A man has been charged with murder after a car crashed through a house and killed a woman at a funeral viewing in north Queensland.

The 48-year-old died and at least 12 other people were seriously injured when a council-owned vehicle was driven into the front of a home at Kowanyama on Friday morning.

It’s believed about 50 mourners were viewing a body at the time.

Two doctors and two nurses from the Royal Flying Doctor Service happened to be attending a clinic nearby and were among the first at the scene.

Two planes from the service were also sent.

Eighteen people were flown to hospitals in Cairns and Townsville.

Up to eight others were treated at the scene for minor injuries such as cuts and bruises.

A 55-year-old man has been charged with murder and is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Saturday.

The Queensland premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said it was a “very tragic incident”.

The indigenous community, on the Gulf of Carpentaria side of Cape York, has a population of a little more than 1000 people.
