He said the government wanted to attract more long-haul flights to Scotland and many of those passengers would want onward connections to London.
"But if the UK is not to have an international hub airport - and there's real pressure now from Schiphol, and from Istanbul and from Dubai - then the short-haul connections we will have to make will be even more environmentally damaging," he added.
