A Grateful Hungarian Refugee
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/14/opinion/a-grateful-hungarian-refugee.html Version 0 of 1. To the Editor: Re “Hungarians Vote Against Migrants, With a Catch” (news article, Oct. 3): As one of the more than 200,000 Hungarian refugees who escaped to the West in 1956, may I point out a fundamental difference between refugees then and (some) now. Not one of us had the slightest intention to do any harm to the countries that were kind enough to take us in. On the contrary. Some of us made big contributions to the economies of the United States, Britain and Australia, to name but three. Take Andy Grove of Intel or all the professors from the great universities, doctors, business people, writers and musicians. With the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution in a few days, may I say a big thank you to all who gave us shelter. I don’t think that we have let you down. ANDREW FRANKL Belvedere, Calif. |
