A young boy and girl are dead and their father critically injured in what police believe was an attempted double murder-suicide.

Police were confronted with the grisly scene after being called to the home at Yanchep in Perth’s northern outskirts at 10.30pm on Thursday.

“They were required to force entry to the premises and inside they located two deceased children: a young boy aged three and a young girl aged five,” police detective inspector Peter Clements told reporters.

“Their father was located also inside suffering from serious injuries ... however his injuries were fairly significant, requiring some fairly intense medical attention.”

Police believe the 35-year-old man, who is under police guard at Royal Perth hospital, injured himself.

Clements said police were not looking for a suspect.

The children’s mother also lived at the home but was not present when police arrived. Clements would not confirm if she had contacted police on Thursday night.

“We are still investigating the circumstances around why we were there and how we ended up there,” he said. “We have a family liaison officer appointed to her, we are in direct contact with her now. She is obviously very, very distressed.

“We are doing what we can at this point to provide support not only to her but the police officers who attended. It was obviously quite distressing.”

Neighbours told reporters the family had moved into the home in the new subdivision about three months ago.

One said his family only realised children were living at the house on Thursday afternoon when they were seen playing on the new front lawn, which was planted on Monday.

They moved in about 12 weeks ago, the neighbour estimated, adding that he had never seen the mother.
