Northolt 'armed' stand-off: Homes evacuated Suspicious device found in house in Newton Abbot
(about 2 hours later)
Police have evacuated about 80 people from their homes in a stand-off with a man reported to be in possession of "dangerous items". A 200m cordon is in place after a suspicious device was found in a house in Devon, police confirmed.
A 200m cordon has been set up in Wood End Lane, Northolt, north-west London, as armed police and negotiators speak to the man. Officers are on the scene and residents have been evacuated after the device was found at a property in Tudor Road, Newton Abbot.
Officers were called to the address at about 01:00 BST over concerns the man had hazardous materials in a house. Devon and Cornwall Police tweeted at 14:45 BST and said "more information" would follow.
Emergency services have not attempted to enter the property. The A381 East Street is closed due to the police incident and is causing significant traffic delays.
A Met Police spokesperson said it believes there is one man inside the house. Paramedics are at the scene on standby, South Western Ambulance Service said.
"It is not known what the man has inside the property" but "attempts have been made by him to prevent access to the address." A staff member at the Jolly Abbot pub, on East Street, said staff and customers "can't go anywhere" while the police cordon is in place.
"There is no suggestion that this incident is terrorist-related nor is it linked to any other ongoing investigation or operation," the spokesperson added. The staff member, who did not want to be identified, said: "If you leave the cordon you can't come back."
