A bus traveling along a California highway on Sunday morning crashed into a tractor-trailer, killing 13 people and injuring dozens, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to a request for comment but a spokeswoman from the organization told The Desert Sun that 11 people who had been riding in the tour bus had been killed. The bus was en route from Red Earth Casino, near the Salton Sea, to Los Angeles, The Desert Sun reported. At a news conference on Sunday afternoon, Jim Abele, a chief at the California Highway Patrol, said that 13 people riding the tour bus back from a casino were killed when the bus, which was traveling at a significantly higher speed, ran into the rig from behind.
Pictures from the scene showed the front end of the bus appeared to have ripped apart the rear of the truck. Emergency workers had hoisted ladders into the part of the bus that was still intact, and an empty stretcher was placed near the two vehicles.
