A community centre has been badly smoke damaged in an overnight arson attack in County Londonderry.

Two bins were placed against the wall of the centre, at King's Lane in Ballykelly, and set alight just before 0430 BST on Saturday.

It is not the first time the centre has been targeted - it was damaged in a similar attack a few years ago.

Local elected representatives said they believed drunken teenagers were behind this latest fire.

Councillor Leslie Cubitt said: "It's a disgrace - anybody who knows anything about it must contact the police.

"That centre is being used every night of the week by many groups - youth clubs, bowling clubs, bingo for the older people.

"We'll just have to try to borrow another hall for a few days."

The SDLP's Michael Carten also condemned the attack.

Community workers have vowed to have the centre re-opened in time for bingo on Monday night.
