A plane carrying Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, skidded off a runway at La Guardia Airport on Thursday night, but no one was injured, according to reports.
The episode happened around 7:15 p.m. as the plane, carrying Governor Pence and more than 30 others, was landing.
Muhammad Jilani, a car service driver who was parked at the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology across the street from the runway, said it was raining “very, very heavily” at the time.
Mr. Jilani, 26, of Elmont, Long Island, said that he heard the loud noise of the plane braking hard and that “water was splashing everywhere.” It was three minutes from the time the plane made a full stop until the first emergency response vehicle arrived, he said, noting that he made it a point to time it.
“It didn’t stop right away,” said Mr. Jilani, who said he is an airplane buff who likes to watch the runway.
The airport was closed, the city’s Office of Emergency Management said on Twitter.
Images on Twitter appeared to show that part of the tarmac was damaged.
Mr. Pence, the running mate of Donald J. Trump, went to the back of the plane to check on members of the news media, according to a post on Twitter.
“Mr. Trump called him from the car. He reached out to Governor Pence and he is very glad everyone aboard is safe,” according a pool report from a journalist covering the Trump campaign.
Governor Pence told reporters that he was fine and that mud had splashed on the front windows of the cockpit, The Associated Press reported.
A reporter for National Review, Tim Alberta, wrote on Twitter: “Plane landed hard, skidded, slid off runway. Everyone laughed. Suddenly, the roar of a million sirens.” |
