A plane carrying Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, skidded off a runway at La Guardia Airport on Thursday night, but no one was injured, according to reports.
Mr. Pence, who is running with Donald J. Trump, went to the back of the plane to check on members of the news media, according to a post on Twitter. The episode happened around 7:15 p.m. as the plane, carrying Governor Pence and more than 30 others, was landing.
The airport is closed, the city’s Office of Emergency Management said on Twitter. Muhammad Jilani, a car service driver who was parked at the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology across the street from the runway, said it was raining “very, very heavily” at the time.
“Mr. Trump called him from the car. He reached out to Governor Pence and he is very glad everyone aboard is safe,” according a press pool report from the Trump campaign. Mr. Jilani, 26, of Elmont, Long Island, said that he heard the loud noise of the plane braking hard and that “water was splashing everywhere.” It was three minutes from the time the plane made a full stop until the first emergency response vehicle arrived, he said, noting that he made it a point to time it.
“It didn’t stop right away,” said Mr. Jilani, who said he is an airplane buff who likes to watch the runway.
