A man has been airlifted to hospital after falling overboard from a yacht off the Dorset coast.

The 40ft (12.2m) yacht was a mile from the entrance to Poole harbour, with several people onboard, when the accident happened in rough water.

The yacht had tried to reach the man but their engine had failed to start.

Two lifeboat crews from Poole pulled him from the water. The man had been in the water for some time and was suffering from hypothermia.

"The casualty was airlifted off the Poole inshore lifeboat by the search and rescue helicopter and taken to Poole hospital for treatment," Jonathan Clark, who was on one of the lifeboats, said.

"Several of the crew on the stricken yacht were suffering from seasickness.

"The all weather lifeboat attached a tow and brought them back to the safety of Dolphin Haven," he said.
