6 People Killed in Baltimore Bus Crash | 6 People Killed in Baltimore Bus Crash |
(about 5 hours later) | |
Six people were killed and at least 10 others were injured on Tuesday when a school bus and a transit bus collided in southwest Baltimore. No children were on the school bus at the time, the police said in a statement.
The Baltimore Police Department said the crash occurred at Frederick Avenue and involved a Maryland Transit Administration bus. Calls to 911 began about 7 a.m., police officials said, adding that the crash was so “catastrophic” that rescue crews were still working their way into parts of the M.T.A. bus more than two hours later.
T.J. Smith, a Police Department spokesman, told reporters that five of the people killed were on the M.T.A. bus, and that the sixth was the driver of the school bus, which was on its way to pick up a child. He did not provide further details about their identities and ages.
The collision occurred along a curve in the road next to a cemetery. The police said the crash was still being investigated, but it appeared that the school bus hit a Mustang from behind, continued east until it struck a pillar near the cemetery and then crashed into the M.T.A. bus, ripping off the left side of that bus.
The Baltimore police commissioner, Kevin Davis, said the people who were on the passenger bus at that hour were “working folks.”
“They are on their way to make a living,” he said.
Ten people had injuries that ranged from minor to critical; eight were on the M.T.A. bus, one was in the vehicle that was rear-ended by the school bus before it plowed into the other bus, and one was an aide, who was the only other person on the school bus, officials said. | Ten people had injuries that ranged from minor to critical; eight were on the M.T.A. bus, one was in the vehicle that was rear-ended by the school bus before it plowed into the other bus, and one was an aide, who was the only other person on the school bus, officials said. |
