‘The African Queen’‘The African Queen’
It’s a good thing Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart were such great actors, or John Huston’s “The African Queen” would be kind of dull. Stuck for most of the movie on a steam boat (the name of which gives this 1951 movie its title), a curmudgeonly captain (Bogart) and a prim missionary (Hepburn) plot a revenge attack against a German vessel during World War I. The action is constrained, but the antagonistic rapport between the two protagonists is expansive and entertaining. It’s a good thing Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart were such great actors, or John Huston’s “The African Queen” would be kind of dull. In this, one of the best sports movies in years, Michael B. Jordan plays an underdog fighter (who just happens to be the son of Apollo Creed), desperate to prove himself with the help of a semiretired legend (who, you know, is Rocky).
