Man shot dead in police encounter after alleged stabbing and petrol attack against woman Man shot dead by police after stabbing and petrol attack against woman
(about 5 hours later)
A man has died on the New South Wales mid-north coast during a confrontation with police, after allegedly dousing a woman with petrol and stabbing her. A man shot dead by police on the NSW mid-north coast had viciously attacked a woman, stabbing her repeatedly and dousing her in petrol.
Police were called to the house in Magnolia Place about 7pm on Thursday after reports a woman had been stabbed repeatedly. The 36-year-old lay in wait before ambushing the woman inside her Port Macquarie home on Thursday evening, police said.
The 28-year-old woman was taken to the Port Macquarie Base hospital for emergency treatment and was said to be in a serious condition. The 28-year-old woman managed to escape, seeking refuge at a neighbouring property, where she was reportedly found inside the garage in a pool of blood.
Police tried to arrest the 36-year-old man after stopping him several hours later on the Pacific Highway at Bonville. She had taken out an apprehended violence order against the man just three days earlier, but he had avoided police since Monday and it was never served.
They did not say how he died, but said an officer had fired a gun. The man fled after the attack and was found later on Thursday night driving on the Pacific Highway.
A critical incident investigation has been launched. NSW police assistant commissioner Jeff Loy said police used road spikes to stop him but he then threatened officers with a knife and a stand-off ensued.
“A critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident including the discharge of a police firearm,” NSW Police said in a statement. “That investigation will be subject to independent review. “He continued to confront police and attack police with a knife and two officers shot the offender,” Loy told reporters in Port Macquarie on Friday.
“All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading up to the man’s death,” the statement said. The couple had known each other for about two months and had been in a short relationship. The woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, where she is in a stable condition.
Police shut down the Pacific Highway near Coffs Harbour for eight hours after the critical incident.
