Jordan shooting: US military trainer killed at air base Jordan shooting: Three US military trainers killed at al-Jafr air base
(35 minutes later)
A US military trainer has been shot dead in an exchange of fire at an air base in Jordan, the US says. Three US military trainers have been shot dead in an exchange of fire at an air base in Jordan, a US official says.
An earlier statement from the Jordanian military said two US trainers had died when the car they were in failed to stop at the gate of the al-Jafr base and was fired upon by security forces. One was killed at the base and two others died later in hospital.
But a US defence official said only one death had been confirmed. They were in vehicles approaching the gate of a military training centre at al-Jafr air base when they came under small-arms fire, the official added.
At least two people were also wounded in the gunfire and taken to hospital, the US official said. An earlier statement from the Jordanian military said the car they were in failed to stop at the gate and was fired upon by security forces.
"One US service member was killed and two others were critically injured just after noon local time [10:00 GMT] in Jordan as they approached the gate to a training facility," the official said. "A total of three US service members died today in the incident in Jordan," the official said.
An investigation was under way to determine the cause of the shooting, the Jordanians said. "Initial reports were that one was killed, two injured. The two injured service members were transported to a hospital in Amman, where they died."
The incident happened around midday local time (10:00 GMT). The US is working with the Jordanian authorities to gather more details about what happened, the official added.
