A 36-year-old man, who repeatedly stabbed a woman and doused her in petrol before being shot dead by police, reportedly sent a string of threatening messages to his victim before the attack.

The man, named in the media as Paul Lambert, lay in wait for his former partner, Angela Jay, at her Port Macquarie home on Thursday evening, allegedly attacking her when she came through the door.

Jay, 28, managed to escape, seeking refuge at a neighbouring property, where she was reportedly found inside their garage in a pool of blood. She was rushed to hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

She had taken out an apprehended violence order against Lambert just three days earlier, but he had avoided the police since Monday and it was never served.

Citing court documents, the ABC reported Jay had taken the legal action after being harassed and receiving a string of threatening messages from Lambert, including one that said: “Your not safe in that house. I have some of the house keys … I need you to understand that this is my good side right now. That good side won’t last long. Especially being rejected.”

Lambert fled after attacking Jay, and was found by police driving on the Pacific Highway.

The NSW Police assistant commissioner Jeff Loy said police used road spikes to stop him but he then threatened officers with a knife and a stand-off ensued.

Loy told reporters in Port Macquarie on Friday that one officer deployed a Taser but it was ineffective.

“He continued to confront police and attack police with a knife and two officers shot the offender,” Loy said.

The Pacific Highway near Coffs Harbour was shut down for eight hours following the incident.

NSW police would not release further information about what happened, but the two officers have been offered counselling. They have not been stood down.

Loy praised Jay’s bravery and offered his condolences to Lambert’s family.

A critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident including the discharge of a police firearm.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
