Technology is a competitive business, and no company offering consumer technology can ever remain stagnant.

Even extreme brand loyalty, such as the kind that fans of Apple (AAPL) have, doesn't last long if the products aren't truly superior.

Apple launched its MacBook Pro update last week, and it was disappointing on many levels including innovation.

To be sure, some of the Silicon Valley media were enamored with Apple's dog and pony show. However, here are five reasons why the MacBook Pro update leaves a lot to be desired:

1. The pricing is arrogant. Apple's premium prices have always been a sore point with mass consumers. However, the company has been able to overcome this hurdle by delivering products that pushed the threshold of innovation and captured the imagination of consumers while also capturing their wallets.

The new MacBook Pro is a well-constructed device, but the technology delivered just doesn't match the price point. To be sure, there will be Apple aficionados who fork over any amount of money for one of the company's products, but the MacBook Pro's price is off-base.

2. What happened to the ports? There is no doubt that Apple is force-feeding the world with its philosophy of getting rid of various ports on its devices, including the MacBook Pro. At the end of the day, users only get USB-C ports and a head jack phone on the MacBook Pro.

So good luck to those who want to connect their iPhones to their new MacBook Pros. They must buy an adapter.

Apple's strategy of deporting ports is perhaps fine for entry-level consumer products, but for power laptops, which MacBook Pros are supposed to be, it just doesn't make sense.
