South West Trains said services running through Dorchester were delayed or revised before a line was reopened shortly before 21:30. A South West Trains spokesman said: "Passengers were taken off the 18:03 Weymouth to Waterloo service at Dorchester South station after reports of electrical arcing underneath the train.
"A problem was identified with the equipment which delivers the electricity to the third rail, which powers the trains, near Dorchester," the firm said. "Emergency services were called as a precaution, but were not required. There was no fire, although the incident did result in flashes, smoke and a bang, as well as cosmetic damage to the train.
"Engineers on site assessed the damage and deemed it possible to re-open one of the lines in the area." The company provided a replacement coach service for affected passengers and apologised for the disruption.
Replacement coaches operated between Wareham and Weymouth.
