(35 minutes later)
One of two western Pennsylvania police officers who were “ambushed” and shot at while responding to a domestic situation has died, authorities have said. A police officer has been killed and another wounded in a shooting in western Pennsylvania.
State police trooper Melinda Bondarenka told reporters the incident began at 3.14am when the Canonsburg officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute. The officers were “ambushed upon their arrival” and immediately shot, Bondarenka said. Police are searching for a suspect. The officers were responding to a domestic situation in Canonsburg, 20 miles south-west of Pittsburgh, at about 3.15am on Thursday morning.
The surviving officer was flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh, Warco said. His condition was not immediately released. State police trooper Melinda Bondarenka said the officers were “ambushed upon their arrival” at the scene and immediately shot. They were taken to hospital, where one has since died.
Police and Swat teams have been seen near at least two homes in the borough about 20 miles south-west of Pittsburgh. It is not clear whether the suspect was in either of those homes. Police have not said whether they know who the suspect is. A search is currently under way for the killer, but police haven’t said whether they have identified a suspect.
Washington County coroner Tim Warco didn’t immediately identify the dead officer because his relatives are yet to be notified.
“It is my sad duty to announce that one officer is deceased and the other officer has been flown to a Pittsburgh hospital,” Warco told reporters. “Obviously, it’s very sketchy at this point it’s still an active scene and search of the shooter.”
Police and Swat teams have been seen near at least two homes in Canonsburg, but it is not clear whether the suspect was in either of those homes. Local residents have been advised to stay indoors while the search for the gunman continues.
“When it first started, one was bleeding badly. The shooter had everyone pinned down when they were trying to get him. I don’t know where he was shot,” a firefighter said about the incident.
