Castle Howard recreated in giant gingerbread house

A North Yorkshire stately home has been reproduced in gingerbread in an ambitious showstopper by a team of bakers.

The 2.5m (8.2ft) by 3.5m (11.4ft) edible model of Castle Howard took 10 people two weeks to make, with key features of the estate recreated in minute detail.

Ingredients included 40kg of flour, 15kg of sugar and 18kg of butter.

There are no immediate plans to consume the construction.

Instead, estate staff hope it will be reused each year as an elaborate Christmas decoration.

The model, which goes on display to the public on Saturday, depicts Castle Howard as it was originally designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1699.

It includes spiced biscuit versions of the Temple of the Four Winds, the Mausoleum and the estate's train station.

Castle Howard, the setting for the 1981 TV series Brideshead Revisited, sits in a 10,000-acre estate in the Howardian Hills, north of York.

The estate has more than 200 listed buildings and monuments.
