HMP Wayland inmate 'left governor with facial fractures'

A prison governor was left with no sensation on one side of his face after he was allegedly attacked by an inmate, a court has heard.

Thomas Howard, 34, has been accused of assaulting Paul Cawkwell and a dog handler at HMP Wayland in Norfolk.

Norwich magistrates heard how the prison boss suffered multiple fractures and needed a metal plate inserted after the alleged attack on 27 July.

Mr Howard entered no plea. The case has been referred to Norwich Crown Court.

Mr Howard has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The second charge relates to a separate incident on 23 July.
