A police source told Reuters that the dead woman had contacted police before she was killed with a knife. She is believed to be the concierge who lived on the ground-floor of the three-storey retirement home which houses some 70 monks at Montferrier-sur-Lez in the Hérault. Police said the home’s residents were safe but that officers were still searching for the gunman.
The man entered the home at around 10pm, threatened monks and attacked the concierge. There were conflicting reports over the identity of the dead woman. A police source told Reuters that she was believed to be the concierge, who had contacted police before she was killed with a knife.
A police operation was under way at the retirement home and the building was locked down. However, later reports said that the concierge had freed herself after being bound and gagged by the gunman.
The woman was a resident of the three-storey retirement home in Montferrier-sur-Lez in the Hérault.
It is thought there were about 60 residents, who included former missionaries as well as monks. The man entered the home at around 10pm.
