At least one woman has been found dead after an armed man entered a retirement home for monks in Montpellier. A woman has been found dead at a retirement home for monks near Montepellier in southern France, after an armed masked man entered the home on Thursday night.
The gunman, who may have been wearing a hoodie, is said to still be in the home, where some 70 monks reside. A police source told Reuters that the dead woman had contacted police before she was killed with a knife. She is believed to be the concierge who lived on the ground-floor of the three-storey retirement home which houses some 70 monks at Montferrier-sur-Lez in the Hérault.
A police operation is underway in the city in southwest France. The man entered the home at around 10pm, threatened monks and attacked the concierge.
A source told Reuters there was no indication that the incident was linked to terrorism. A police operation was under way at the retirement home and the building was locked down.
More details soon. The French news channel BFM TV reported that the police search of the building was over, all the residents were safe, but the armed man was on the run.
The Paris anti-terrorist investigations unit is not running the investigation at this point.
Local police referred to a “criminal act”.
