Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said its engineers were working to establish the cause of the fault. | |
It said about 18,178 properties in the SO22 and SO23 areas were initially affected by the fault. | |
Donna Bache-Holleran, who owns a jewellery shop off the High Street said: "The High Street was absolutely packed, then all the lights went out and everyone had to empty the public out of their shops and lock up. | |
"It's a major headache." | |
SSEN said electricity was restored to about 14,000 properties shortly before 16:00. | |
It said it hoped to get the power back on to the remaining 4,000 properties by 17:00. |
