Four women, including one in her 80s, have been pushed off a Melbourne train station platform on to the tracks in a bizarre daylight attack.

Victoria Police said a 45-year-old man initially stabbed a woman’s handbag then, when his knife broke in half, went on to assault four women at Glenhuntly station about 11am on Sunday.

“The women were pushed off the platform on to the tracks and all sustained non-life threatening injuries,” a police spokeswoman said in a statement, adding all four were taken to the Alfred hospital.

The woman in her 80s suffered head and leg injuries while another woman in her 60s suffered facial injuries, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

The 45-year-old man from Carnegie has been arrested and is being interviewed by police.
