The football world has reacted with shock and solidarity to the news that players and staff of Brazilian side Chapecoense were among the 81 passengers and crew on board a plane that has crashed in Colombia. The football world has united in grief over the news that players from the Brazilian club Chapecoense were among 81 people on a plane that crashed in Colombia, killing most of those on board.
Police say five people survived the crash, but the rest of those on board are thought to have died including many Chapecoense players and the head coach. On the way to what would have been one of the biggest games in their history, the team - and journalists travelling with them - had shared pictures and video on social media, describing the journey as "the flight to history".
There has been an outpouring of grief and support on social media, while crowds have reportedly gathered close to Chapecoense's home ground. But as the news emerged of the crash, excitement turned to shock and disbelief with supporters tweeting "#ForçaChape", meaning "Strength to Chape". It quickly became the top trend on Twitter.

The plane was bound for Medellin, where Chapecoense were due to face Colombian side Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in one of the biggest games in their history. In a poignant tribute to the victims, Chapecoense changed the colour of their logo on Twitter from its usual green and white colours to black.
Images have emerged purportedly showing team members on board the plane before the crash. Atletico Nacional, the club they were due to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana added a black ribbon to their crest on Twitter as a mark of respect.
Speaking to Colombian news channel Teleantioquia, the Atletico Nacional club president, Juan Carlos de la Cuesta, said: "We are all in mourning, the world in general." Several other Brazilian clubs shared messages of solidarity on social media, including Brazilian champions Palmeiras, Vasco da Gama, Flamengo and Corinthians.
The club added a black ribbon to their crest on Twitter as a mark of respect. Neymar, the FC Barcelona forward and most celebrated Brazilian footballer playing today, used the prayer emoji to mark the tragedy.
Less well known outside of Brazil, Chapecoense play in the country's top division. Atletico Madrid, whose former player Cleber Santana, was on board tweeted, "We are shocked by the plane crash, which carried the Chapecoense team and our former player Cleber Santana."
And football clubs across the country have also been quick to show their support.
Several have shared messages of solidarity on social media, including Brazilian champions Palmeiras, Vasco da Gama, Flamengo and Corinthians.
