SNP gain Angus Council seat after by-election win

The SNP has gained a seat on Angus Council following a by-election win.

Brenda Durno will represent the Arbroath East and Lunan ward after beating nearest candidate Derek Wann of the Scottish Conservatives by 210 votes.

The seat was vacated by independent councillor Bob Spink, who stepped down in September.

Mrs Durno received 919 votes in the by-election with Mr Wann receiving 709 votes.

Independent candidates Lois Speed and Kevin Smith polled 452 and 309 votes respectively.

John Ruddy of Scottish Labour received 177 votes and Liberal Democrat Richard Moore received 60 votes.

The turnout for the by-election was 21.5%.

Mrs Durno said: "I will work tirelessly for my constituents to ensure their voices are heard.

"This is a fantastic community and I am committed to working with the rest of my council colleagues to make it an even better place to live."
