Walter Scott: Judge declares mistrial in police shooting of unarmed black man Walter Scott: Judge declares mistrial in police shooting of unarmed black man
(35 minutes later)
A judge has declared a mistrial in the fatal police shooting of Walter Scott. A mistrial has been declared in the murder trial of Michael Slager, the former South Carolina police officer, who fatally shot Walter Scott, an unarmed black man, following a routine traffic stop in 2015.
The news comes after a lone juror said he was unable to convict the former police officer Michael Slager, who was fired after video surfaced of the shooting. “We as the jury regret to inform the court that despite the best efforts of all members, we are unable to come to a unanimous decision,” the jury wrote to Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman on Monday afternoon.
The former officer was fired from his position after a bystander released the now-infamous footage of the incident showing Mr Slager firing his handgun, and striking him five times, when Mr Scott was running at least 17 feet in the opposite direction.
It’s not immediately clear if state prosecutors will retry Mr Slager, however, Judge Clinton promised to re-try the case with a new jury if a mistrial was declared. Mr Slager still faces charges in federal court and could face up to a lifetime in prison.
