Tiny Police Cars Do the Job

To the Editor: Re “Fighting Crime Just Got More ‘Adorable’ ” (news article, Dec. 2): Your article about the advent of “adorable” police cars in New York City, the tiny two-seat Smart Fortwos, made me recall fondly the police cars of rural West Germany in 1972. We were staying in a bed-and-breakfast in Gemünden am Main, where the proprietors had a school-age child who studied English at the local school. The teacher eagerly agreed when we offered to speak with the class to let them practice their English. The first question I asked was, “How can the police catch criminals in those tiny Volkswagens?” After a long pause, a child in the back offered, “The criminals have Volkswagens, too.” DIANE ST.
