Officers arrested the man in Swindon on Monday, and took him to a Wiltshire police station. He has been released on bail.
A spokesman said: "An investigation was launched by Falcon detectives after police were made aware of threats made online against a 51-year-old woman from November 3 onward.
"As part of the same investigation, officers also issued a 'cease and desist' notice on December 3 to a 38-year-old man from Fife, Scotland."
The Met's Falcon unit is dedicated to fighting fraud and online crime.
