Tata Steel: Unions discuss deal to keep Port Talbot open Tata Steel: Deal secured to keep Port Talbot open, union says
(about 2 hours later)
Union leaders are discussing a possible deal with Tata Steel which would keep the Port Talbot works and other UK plants open. A deal to secure jobs and production at Port Talbot and other steelworks across the UK has been made with Tata Steel, Community Union has confirmed.
Representatives from Community, Unite and the GMB are holding talks at the Port Talbot steelworks. It follows talks involving representatives from Community, Unite and the GMB at the Port Talbot steelworks on Wednesday.
Details of the deal are not known, but it is understood unions insisted on maintaining the site's two blast furnaces in talks with Tata last week. Tata's UK business was originally put up for sale in March.
Tata's UK business was put up for sale in March.
But this was put on hold as the company considered a European tie-up with German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp.
Almost 7,000 people are employed by Tata Steel across Wales, including more than 4,000 in Port Talbot.
Other plants that would benefit from a deal being reached include Llanwern, Trostre, Shotton, Corby, Hartlepool and sites in the West Midlands.
Talks were held between the company and unions last week, where it is thought the issues of pensions, production and jobs were discussed.
Both the Welsh and UK governments offered financial support, but the company's pension scheme has been deterring potential buyers.
