Teenager gun murder case reopened
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/england/manchester/7436059.stm Version 0 of 1. The murder of a 14-year-old boy who was shot dead during a surge in gang violence in Manchester in the early 1990s is being re-investigated. Benji Stanley was blasted three times with a shotgun as he queued for food in a takeaway shop in Moss Side in 1993. His death prompted national headlines and turned attention to the issue of guns and gangs in the city. Police have never traced his killer but have confirmed the case is being looked at by the Cold Case Review Unit. The move was confirmed as police unveiled details of a £6.5m investment in its Xcalibre gun crime task force. Greater Manchester Police said they had had recent success in driving down gang-related crime but are determined to stamp it out completely. The funding means Xcalibre will get additional help from a number of specialist teams, including the unit which examines historic cases. Senior officers said the unit would be re-examining some of the old, unsolved murders relating to gang shootings. They confirmed to the BBC that Benji's murder was one of those cases the team would be looking in to. |
