Nine-vehicle crash shuts motorway Six vehicles in motorway crashes
(about 2 hours later)
Both carriageways of the M53 motorway in Wirral have been closed, following a crash involving nine vehicles. Six vehicles were involved in crashes on a motorway as motorists stopped to help the driver of lorry which hit the central reservation, police said.
The motorway is shut from junction three to Kingsway Tunnel in Wallasey, after the crash on Tuesday morning, police said. Both carriageways of the M53 in Wirral were closed on Tuesday morning, following the accidents.
One person has been taken to hospital following the accident. The southbound carriageway reopened at about 1000 GMT, but the northbound lanes at junction three are still closed, with diversions in operation.
The accident adds to continuing delays at the tunnel, following an overnight closure when a lorry overturned on Monday evening. A 43-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Merseyside Police are warning of delays. Merseyside Police say a lorry hit the central reservation and further accidents were caused on both carriageways when people stopped to help.
