What's in a name?

For David Davies, MP, everything - especially the way it's spelt.

Since his sound-alike namesake David Davis announced he was resigning his seat to force a by-election life has been tricky.

David Davies, MP for Monmouth, has been bombarded with calls from people asking him why he is doing it.

Even when he explains he is another MP people want to know his views.

"It's very frustrating," said David Davies, MP, with an 'e'.

"I've had scores of calls. Mainly from the media but also from members of the public.

"Even when I explain I'm the 'wrong' Mr Davies they still want to ask me what I think about it."

David Davis - without an 'e' - was shadow home secretary but resigned his position and seat of Haltemprice and Howden forcing a by-election.

He said he wanted to fight on the issue of the erosion of civil liberties after the opposition narrowly lost the vote to introduce detention without charge of 42 days.

David Davies, MP for Monmouth, had been hoping to get on with constituency work, but found his time spent fielding calls about the by-election news from people getting their wires crossed.

"I came down to my constituency hoping for a quiet day's work but I can't get on with anything," he said.

"I've just opened a scheme to help people find jobs in agriculture but people won't leave me alone."

Mr Davies said that since his election as MP for Monmouth in May 2005 there has been some confusion, but nothing on this scale.
