Future of the EU under scrutiny

Version 0 of 1.

The fallout from Ireland's decision to reject the new EU treaty occupies several front pages.

The Sunday Telegraph believes the 'No' vote has decisively defeated the idea of a "super-state" Europe.

The News of the World agrees. It warns Gordon Brown to take note. "Snub this vote at your peril," it writes.

But others may be harder to persuade. The Observer says the leaders of France and Germany are "refusing to take Ireland's no for an answer".

'Broken' institution

The Independent on Sunday has an exclusive report on more confidential Treasury documents being left on a train.

The "gaffe" is "hugely embarrassing" for Gordon Brown, it says, adding that the government has an "ignoble history of misplaced sensitive files".

And there's more bad news for Mr Brown in the Observer, as a key figure in the civil service attacks her own institution.

Zenna Atkins, chair of Ofsted, calls it "desperately overpopulated", "broken" and stuck in the 19th Century.

Cameron 'reeling'

Many papers examine the impact of shadow home secretary David Davis's resignation over the 42-day terror row.

The Mail on Sunday carries an ICM poll done in his constituency which suggests Mr Davis has "massive public support".

But the Sunday Times says his boss David Cameron has been left "reeling" by the "unforeseen eruption" in his party.

As for Mr Davis himself, the paper calls him "a stormy petrel of politics, combining principle, pugnacity and sheer devilment in equal measure".

Wedding fever

The tabloids continue to enjoy the nuptials of footballer Wayne Rooney and Colleen McLoughlin.

The People says the couple have already secured a multi-million pound contract with a glossy magazine for photographs of their first baby.

They might need the money if the Sunday Mirror is correct. It says their wedding rings alone cost a million pounds.

But the ever sensible News of the World says the Rooneys could have saved money by getting the rings at Tesco instead.
