Two suspected attackers were shot dead by Turkish police in the coastal city of Izmir on Thursday following an explosion outside a court complex that a police officer and court employee. Two people have been killed in a car bomb attack outside a court complex in the coastal Turkish city of Izmir that was followed by gunfight between police and three suspected attackers.
Photographs showed two cars in flames after the initial blast and reports said 10 people had been injured. Several ambulances and police were dispatched to the scene. The blast killed a police officer and a court employee, and wounded five others. Two suspected attackers were shot dead.
The secretary general of the city municipality, Bugra Gokce, told CNN Turk a car bomb was suspected. A second vehicle thought to have belonged to the attackers was detonated in a controlled explosion, and several ambulances and police were dispatched to the scene.
Police confirmed two people had been shot and said a third attacker was being sought. Initial findings suggest the Kurdish PKK militant group was behind the attack, provincial governor Erol Ayyildiz said.
Turkey’s state-run news agency said the third suspect was wearing a black coat and a white beret. “A clash erupted after our police officers wanted to stop a vehicle at a police check point in front of Bayrakli courthouse,” Ayyildiz told reporters. “In this clash, terrorists detonated the car bomb while trying to escape.”
The incident follows a string of attacks, carried out by the Islamic State group or by Kurdish militants, that have left Turkey on edge. Police said a third attacker was being sought. Turkey’s state-run news agency said the suspect was wearing a black coat and a white beret.
