Israeli strikes kill six in Gaza Israel and Hamas 'agree truce'
(20 minutes later)
At least six Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air strikes in southern Gaza, reports say. Israel and militant group Hamas have agreed on a truce starting this Thursday, a senior Hamas official has told the BBC.
Islamic Jihad said a missile struck a car carrying five of its members near Khan Younis. A sixth man died in a separate strike. The official said he was confident all militant groups in Gaza would abide by the agreement, brokered by Egypt.
Israel confirmed two attacks on "vehicles carrying terror operatives" and one on a person without a vehicle. There has been no confirmation of the deal from Israel.
Correspondents say the strikes could derail talks between Israel and Hamas militants who control the Gaza Strip. Earlier at least six Palestinians were reportedly killed in Israeli air strikes in southern Gaza. Israel said it had targeted "terror operatives".
A Hamas source had said earlier that a deal to end hostilities and partially reopen Gaza's borders could happen this week.
A second stage of the plan would focus on the return of a captured Israeli soldier and on a deal to reopen the main Rafah crossing into Egypt.
Reports said a number of other people were hurt in the Israeli air strikes.
