Arrest in pensioner sex assault

A 37-year-old man has been arrested by gardai investigating a serious sexual assault on an 86-year-old woman in Monaghan town.

The man was arrested on Monday by officers investigating the attack which began on Sunday night.

It is understood a man forced his way into the woman's home and subjected her to a series of assaults over several hours.

She is said to have been deeply traumatised by her ordeal.

Garda forensic teams examined the victim's home and interviews with neighbours and witnesses have been conducted.
