Aircraft will be flying early Wednesday over the Washington area as part of regularly scheduled exercises designed to ensure a rapid response to aerial intrustions.

The exercise, conducted by the North American Aerospace Defense command, will be held from midnight to 2:30 a.m., officials said.

Participating aircraft will include Air Force F-16s as well as a Coast Guard helicopter. The F-16 is a supersonic fighter.
