A 69-year-old man has been arrested by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene.
The car is believed to have damage to its front windscreen. He remains in custody following a police appeal for information.
Mr Whitworth died at the scene, paramedics said.
Sgt Mark Thomas, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "With the CCTV opportunities outside the pub and at several other locations in the area, it is only a matter of time until we are able to identify this vehicle and the driver inside.
"I would now like to appeal directly to the driver of the car. Come forward before we find you."
