A 35-year-old Metropolitan Police officer has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The arrest on Tuesday came after an incident in West Thurrock, Essex, involving a newspaper photographer, an Essex Police spokeswoman said.

The arrested man is in custody at Grays police station, she added.

The Met said he was on a career break from special operations and is thought to be a royal protection officer.

The Met Police spokeswoman also said that the police director of professional standards was looking into the officer's financial affairs.
