Decision on cluster school heads deferred Six cluster schools set ups approved, two deferred
(about 1 hour later)
Highland councillors have deferred making a decision on a plan to give head teachers responsibility for up to five primary schools because of staff shortages. Councillors in the Highlands have voted to introduce changes which would see several clusters of primary schools overseen by just one head teacher.
The non-teaching role is being considered to cover schools in parts of the Highlands, including Lochaber. Proposals which would see groups of up to half a dozen schools under just one head have been criticised for a lack of consultation for parents.
Highland Council's education, care and adult services committee has put back a decision until a meeting in March. Plans for six such clusters will now go ahead with two others - Farr in Sutherland and Mallaig being deferred.
The local authority has looked at the idea in previous years. Education chief Jim Stephen said the move was not about saving money.
In the Highland Council area there are already a number of head teachers looking more than one primary school.
