Four people were taken to hospitals early Sunday morning after elevated levels of carbon monoxide were found in an apartment in the District, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. in a the 700 block of 51st Street NE, the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department said.

According to the department, a water heater appeared to be the source of the carbon monoxide. It is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly to breathe.

The fire department said two adults showed elevated levels of the gas, and were taken to hospitals. Two children were taken as a precaution, the department said.

Symptoms of monoxide poisoning may include dizziness, nausea, weakness, shortness of breath, headache, confusion and blurred vision. In some cases victims lose consciousness.
