A "significant number" of canned beans and sausages are being recalled by Tesco amid safety fears.

The supermarket giant said that pieces of plastic from the production line in Italy have been found in a small number of the cans.

Own-brand cans, of 220g, 420g and 850g, as well as the 567g value cans and 420g cans of vegetarian beans and sausages have been pulled from the shelves.

The cans have a best-before date of December 2009.

Tesco is urging customers not to eat the contents and is offering a refund to anyone who has bought the products.

"The recall is purely a precautionary measure and no other products are affected," said a spokeswoman for the company.

She said that a significant number of cans had been recalled.
