(about 6 hours later)
Israeli troops have killed a 20-year-old Palestinian in Gaza as they pressed ahead with an offensive against militants who fire rockets at Israel. At least five Palestinians have been killed by Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip as troops pressed on with operations against armed groups.
The man was shot by tank fire directed at a block of flats in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip. Two militants were killed in an air strike in Beit Lahiya and two others died in armed clashes with troops.
Palestinian security officials said militants had launched rockets at Israel from near the block. A man who may have been a civilian or a militant was also shot dead.
Two rockets have landed on the Israeli side of the border, one in the city of Sderot, but caused no injuries. A 57-year-old female suicide bomber attacked Israeli troops in Jabaliya. It was not clear if she detonated her bomb or was killed by an Israeli grenade.
There are conflicting reports whether the dead man, Muhammad Jarjawi, had been fighting Israeli troops or was a civilian. Two soldiers were lightly wounded in the blast, Israeli army radio said. Governing Palestinian party Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack by the bomber, named as Fatma Najar.
