Mother on murder attempt charge

A 17-year-old mother has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of her two-month-old son.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Hereford Magistrates' Court where she was also charged with child cruelty.

The baby, who is in hospital, is believed to have been smothered and battered, the court was told.

The woman, who was arrested at Hereford County Hospital on Friday, was remanded in custody.

West Mercia Police have said the baby boy, who has been taken into care, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
