The crash happened shortly after 2100 GMT on Friday on the B7076 Gretna to Abington road at Ecclefechan in Dumfries and Galloway.

The driver of the silver Vauxhall Corsa, a 21-year-old man from Lockerbie, died at the scene.

A 27-year-old man who was travelling in the car suffered serious injuries, police said.

The road was closed for several hours to allow crash investigators on to the scene. It has since been reopened.

A force spokesman said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
