Plaid Cymru has won a council by-election in Ceredigion following the resignation of a Liberal Democrat. Plaid Cymru has won a Ceredigion council by-election from the Liberal Democrats, while Labour has held a seat in Caerphilly.

Former councillor Eric Griffiths resigned after Dyfed-Powys Police said a 64-year-old man had been arrested and cautioned for a sexual offence. In Caerphilly, Phyl Griffiths won the Risca West seat left vacant by the death in May of her husband Keith.

Thursday's polling saw Aled Davies receive 271 votes, ahead of Lib Dem Alexander Dauncey (252), independent Carol Kolczak (98), Labour's Richard Boudier (36) and Conservative Luke Evetts (17).

Mr Griffiths stood down less than a month after he was re-elected to Ceredigion council on 1 May. Meanwhile, in Caerphilly, Labour retained Risca West, with Mrs Griffiths receiving 636 votes, ahead of Plaid Cymru's Sadie Ackerman (315), Conservative Ian Chivers (137) and Lib Dem Mark Maguire (47).
The result leaves the political situation in Caerphilly unchanged. Both Labour and Plaid have 32 seats, and there are nine independents.
Caerphilly is Plaid-led, with the support of two independents.
