A man shot by police in Arlington during an attempted traffic stop Wednesday died of his injuries, officials said Thursday.

Daniel George Boak, 28, of Centreville, Va., struck an officer with his truck before being shot, police said. Family members declined to comment.

Boak was traveling on the southbound side of Interstate 395 in Arlington at about 4:30 p.m. when police noticed from a license plate reader that the truck belonged to a wanted suspect. When police tried to stop the vehicle, Boak maneuvered around the officers, authorities said. Boak then got off the highway at Glebe Road. As Boak waited in heavy traffic, officers again tried to stop the car, approaching on foot.

Boak ignored their commands, police said, driving the truck into an officer and pinning him against another vehicle. At that point, police said, several officers fired at the driver and were then able to move the truck and free the trapped officer.

No one else was in the truck.

Boak was wanted on a warrant issued May 2 by Virginia State Police, department spokeswoman Corinne Geller said, at the request of the Virginia Department of Corrections Probation and Parole. He was accused of attempting to falsify a drug test by adulterating or substituting a urine sample, a misdemeanor. Authorities would not say why the drug test had been required.

Arlington police spokeswoman Ashley Savage would not say how many officers shot at Boak or how many shots were fired. All officers involved are on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy, she said.

Officers and fire department medics performed lifesaving measures on Boak at the scene. He was taken to Virginia Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The stricken officer was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said. On Thursday they said the officer had been released from the hospital.
