"This will put into place firm cooperation between two police forces,where known sex offenders who completed their sentences are intending to move and give notification to police they are intending to cross borders," he said. "The signing of the memorandum also gives a clear signal to thosewho would attempt to exploit national boundaries that both governments speakwith one voice, he said.
"If they don't give that notification to police and it becomes clear that they haven't, then they will face a severe sentence as a result of the measures we are bringing in today. "There is to be no hiding place for those who have offended in this way andseek to do so again by travelling between jurisdictions and flouting the law."
Michael McDowell, the Irish Republic's deputy prime ministerand justice minister, claimed the initiative showed the Irish government's determinationto be aware of all movements.
"While the Garda Siochana (Irish Police) and UK police forces have beenexchanging this information for some time, this Memorandum of Understanding willput arrangements on a formal footing," he added.
"I am confident that our police forces will use this memorandum to ensure thesafety of people in our countries."
